The Only Reason to Wake Up Early

wake up early

The only good reason to wake up early is to have more time.

What you do with that time is up to you. You could meditate, exercise, read or watch the latest episode of Game of Thrones or just be present.

But the fact that you have more time if you wake up early is no joke.

I’ve been a night owl since I can remember, and on the days when I’ve managed to wake up early, the days that are far and few in between, I’ve always been surprised at the amount of extra time I had for myself.

I don’t use the word ‘extra’ lightly. If you think that every day has 24 hours then you’re wrong. The real time that you have at your disposal is the time when life isn’t coming in your way. As the day progresses, life wakes up and starts knocking on your door with mundane requests like getting the AC fixed or emailing the bank about that blocked cheque. And before you know, the time train has left the station.

I woke up at 8 AM today (early by my standards), and I was able to read several pages of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, along with some meditation and exercise, all before the clock hit 9:30 AM and my 7-month old daughter woke up to demand my attention.

I am going to try to keep at it this time.
